NO YOU SHAVE
Modern Art, Boise, ID
May 1, 2014

No You Shave is a performance piece by Rachel Smith and Juventino Aranda. This performance took place at Modern Art, an event that allows artists to transform a hotel room of the Modern Hotel located in Boise, Idaho. This exhibition was a collaborative performance with Juventino Aranda based around the themes of marginalization and an idealized nostalgic past. Using 1950s Americana to transformed the hotel room into a contemporary yesteryear using nostalgic objects as ubiquitous as the Royal typewriter, straight-edged razors, gingham fabric, and paper ephemera. During the duration of the event Aranda and Smith swapped gender rolls with Smith shaving her face, while Aranda shaved his legs for hours on end while the audience watched from outside the hotel bathroom.
